About Aqueo
Our Mission
Aqueo helps surgical eye clinics catch ocular surface disease before it affects a procedure, and track how the surface recovers afterward. We screen and record; the surgeon interprets and decides.
Decision‑support only. Not a diagnostic tool, and not a medical device.
Why we built it
Ocular surface disease is common before cataract and refractive surgery, often silent, and easy to miss in a busy clinic. When a patient who felt fine beforehand is uncomfortable afterward, they tend to blame the operation. Aqueo was built to close that gap, developed alongside practising eye surgeons and shaped by how a real clinic runs.
The solution is a three-minute check at the clinic that flags who warrants a closer look and creates a clear baseline to measure against post-op. No capital equipment, no consumables, no new silo, just a screening layer that fits the visit the clinic already runs.
What we believe
Grounded in evidence
Aqueo uses the OSDI-6 symptom questionnaire, and blink metrics drawn from peer-reviewed literature. We cite our sources, and we don’t overstate what a screening can tell you.
Explainable, not a black box
Every result comes from transparent, rule-based methods a clinician can inspect and reason about. No AI making calls it can’t account for. The clinician stays in charge of every decision.
Privacy by design
We minimize identifiers, encrypt everything, and store all clinical data in Canada. The clinic remains the Health Information Custodian; Aqueo only ever processes data on its behalf.
What Aqueo does
In the clinic, the patient completes a short symptom questionnaire and a guided blink test at the kiosk; the clinician reviews an objective baseline and, on follow-up, the change against it; and the patient leaves with a private education portal for at-home care.
Privacy & Compliance
Privacy and data protection are fundamental to everything we do. Aqueo operates as an authorized agent under PHIPA (Personal Health Information Protection Act) in Ontario and as a service provider under PIPEDA.
We process clinical screening data on behalf of clinics, including limited patient demographics provided by the clinic for accurate record matching. All data is stored in Canada (AWS ca-central-1) with encryption at rest and in transit. Each clinic maintains full control as the Health Information Custodian (HIC).
